Who am I?

A Bit About Me

I’m an American, living in Prague in the Czech Repubic. When I’m not teaching, I’m studying Czech, discovering micro-brews or lifting weights. However, my main passion is, and has been for the last 15 years, helping others master the English language.

I believe that learning a language is more than memorizing words or rules; it’s about building connections, expressing ideas, and discovering new perspectives.

More about my experience and philosophy

In my 15+ years of teaching experience, I’ve worked with a large range of students. These have ranged from six-year-olds learning their first introductions to sixty-six-year-olds looking to keep their minds sharp and maintain their fluency. Most of the students I’ve worked with have been in between: highschool students applying to universities, fresh university graduates crafting English versions of cover letters and CVs, business professionals wanting to perfect their presentation skills or manage teleconferences with international clients.

And over these 15+, I’ve witnessed so many successes: a student who barely spoke being able to recount detailed experiences of their travels; one who refused to do any reading now finishing full-length novels over the weekend, just for fun; one whose voice shook as they nervously prepared for an English proficiency exam who sent me ecstatic updates about their top results; many, many students who were afraid to speak at all and who, after a few months, couldn’t stop. Every time, I would hear, “Thank you so much! You’re a wonderful teacher.” And every time, I would reply, ‘You did the work; I just helped you find the way.’ I meant it then, and I mean it now.

I truly believe that they all deserve full credit for their successes and that they simply allowed me to watch them grow and flower. If I can take any credit at all, it’s in the fact that I earned their trust and stood by them, constantly reminding them that they were capable of doing anything they set their minds to, and that as long as there was a will, there would be a way. The hard truth is that I cannot (and no one can) force anyone to learn anything. Certainly, a language cannot be “shoved” into a person’s brain. Given that, everything my students learn, they learn themselves. I just keep them motivated, inspired, confident and curious. And I stick by them as their greatest champion.
